Henry Lawson classics coming to Performing Arts CentreTwo Henry Lawson classics ‘The Bush Undertaker’ and ‘The Drover’s Wife’ will be showing at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon on Friday 7 July at 1pm. By Latrobe City Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News Latrobe’s performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that the stories are about ordinary people struggling to live off the land.
"This entertaining adaptation captures the humour, stoicism and pathos of these great Australian characters in a beautifully crafted, highly visual piece of ensemble theatre," Ms Roberts said.
"In ‘The Drover’s Wife’, the wife, played by Anastasia Malinoff, is on guard against a deadly snake. She remembers experiences from her past - dramatic flashbacks, which are vividly brought to life by the ensemble company. Isolated from any sign of civilisation, she battles bushfire, flood and even a mad bullock! Her instinct to protect and determination not to capitulate makes this a moving, uniquely Australian story of courage, joy and survival," Ms Roberts explained.
"For ‘The Bush Undertaker’, Henry Lawson, writing at his desk, transforms into the old man of the title, journeying through ‘a land of living death’. With his dog, Five Bob (Grant Mouldey) as company he digs up an old grave, collects the bones and discovers the corpse of his good friend Brummy. How can he give his mate a proper burial in this ‘God–forsaken part’ and why are the goannas flocking?"
Ms Roberts said that the show was presented by the Petty Traffikers Theatre Company, renowned for adapting classic Australian stories into memorable stage performances.
"Both stories feature a trio of actors, a musician, costumes, props and lighting to recreate the period. The actors give superb performances, receiving rave reviews. This is definitely a must-see production," Ms Roberts concluded.
Tickets, priced at $15 per person, are available from the Latrobe City Box Office by calling 5176 3559.
