$40,000 savings at Cowes treatment plant

Works to streamline aeration tanks at the Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant will save Westernport Water $40,000 a year.

By Susan Webster - 2nd November 2007 - Back to News

The works will allow the water corporation to switch from double to single-tank operation during times of low flow.

Westernport Water Managing Director David Mawer said: "The new aeration operation is leaner and more cost-effective. It also uses a lot less power.

"Limiting the system to one tank for much of the year gives us greater savings and more flexibility."

The Cowes plant can treat up to 8.5ML per day, mainly drawn from customers on Phillip Island and San Remo.

Previously, the waste was gravity-fed into the 4.5ML first tank and then pumped into a second 7ML tank before going onto treatment.

The resulting sludge was then pumped back into the first tank.

The new works cuts out the second tank stage and a new pipeline now allows the treated sludge to be directed to either tank.

"That means we can take a tank offline for maintenance or repair without affecting the whole plant operations," Mr Mawer said. "It gives us cost savings, flexibility and the means to cope with the differing levels of flow."
