Bass Coast Gets Own Baton RelayBass Coast will get its own Shire-wide Baton Relay, as part of Council’s series of events leading up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 29th August 2005 - Back to News The Bass Coast Baton Relay will be held on Sunday 20 November 2005 and aims to visit as many communities as possible throughout the Shire.
Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said the Relay would be held as a celebration of the Shire’s community spirit and recognise those who have played an important role within the community.
"We invite the community to nominate individuals or organisations who they believe have served their community and should be recognised for their achievements," said Mr Bawden.
The nominated person or organisation should meet some of the following criteria:
- Made an outstanding contribution to the community
- Engendered pride in the community
- Assisted those less fortunate than themselves
Nominations close on 1 October 2005 at 5.00pm and can be made on the prescribed form available on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au or at Council’s Customer Service, Visitor Information or YMCA centres.
The Bass Coast Baton Relay is different to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay, which is due to pass through the Shire during March next year.
Community members and groups will have an opportunity to be involved in a number of other events planned for the Shire including the Official Launch of activities on October 19, an Arts Aware Travelling Exhibition and Writing Competition, a Sporting Expo facilitated by the YMCA and Bass Coast Opening Ceremony celebrations.
