Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today there were dozens of level crossings in country Victoria which serious safety hazards for drivers, pedestrians and trains.

Mr Davis said the Bracks Labor Government’s spending on level crossings throughout Victoria, but especially in country Victoria, was shameful.

"While wasting $500,000 every day promoting itself through television, newspaper and radio advertising, the Bracks Labor Government has neglected the basics of infrastructure maintenance," Mr Davis said.

"Country level crossings have been particularly neglected, many of which are now posing serious safety risks."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would commit $22 million for the upgrade of country Victoria’s unsafe and neglected level crossings.

"A Liberal Government will begin with the urgent upgrade of level crossings in Trawalla and Birregurra," he said.

"We will also build a new level crossing in Warragul, easing traffic congestion and frustration in the town’s CBD.

"A Liberal Government will also assess other country level crossings in need of upgrades."

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party’s commitment to country level crossings complemented its policy to fund local country roads and bridges.

"A Liberal Government will, for the first time, provide funding for local roads and bridges in country Victoria," Mr Davis said.

"We will provide $127 million for this purpose, matching the Federal Government’s ‘Roads to Recovery’ program.

"A Liberal Government is committed to upgrading level crossings, roads and bridges, to ensure the safety

of country Victorians."
