Wellington’s latest Australian citizens to be sworn in by Minister for Citizenship

The latest Wellington residents to take Australian citizenship will be sworn in by local Federal MP and recently appointed Minister for Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Peter McGauran, on Friday 26 November.

By Wellington Shire Council - 25th November 2004 - Back to News

This will be the first time Mr McGauran has had the opportunity to officiate at a Wellington citizenship ceremony in his new capacity and six local residents will be present at the council’s offices in Foster Street, Sale to take their oaths of commitment.

Also attending will be friends and relatives, along with Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos – who will assist with the proceedings.

Working on behalf of the Department of Immigration, Wellington Shire Council is responsible for formally conferring Australian citizenship on qualifying overseas residents who live in the municipality. Such ceremonies are held on a regular basis and organised by the council’s Chief Executive Officer Unit.

Said Mayor Jeff Amos: "We’re delighted that our local Federal MP Peter McGauran, as the responsible Minister, will be officiating at the coming ceremony. This will be a very special day for all those becoming Australian citizens and the fact that this occasion will be led by the Minister for Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs will make it even more significant.

"As a community that is keen to encourage people to become residents of the shire, Wellington welcomes all who wish to take on Australian citizenship and contribute to the development of this wonderful area."

Permanent residents who have lived in Australia for at least two years and who are looking to become citizens can obtain an application kit from the council’s service centres at Sale and Yarram, as well as from selected post offices in rural and regional area of the shire. Alternatively call the Department of Immigration information line on 131 880, or visit the web site www.citizenship.gov.au for more details.

In addition there is citizenship information on the council’s web site www.wellington.vic.gov.au (listed in the A-Z index under ‘citizenship’).
