Rosie Gillies, Department of Primary Industries Weedbuster Coordinator for East Gippsland, invites anyone with an interest in weed control to take part in the activities planned for Friday 22nd October.

The East Gippsland events include:

  • Informative walks with presentation on weed control and related issues will be conducted at:
Paynesville, Sunset Cove, near the boat ramp.
Lakes Entrance, bottom of Seaview Parade, Kalimna Heights.
Bairnsdale, Riverine Street Doghole Access Road (from town head north-west along Riverine Street towards Wy Yung, take the first right after the 70km/hr speed limit sign).
  • A weed identification display from 8:00am to 12.00 noon at the Bairnsdale Saleyards.
  • A community BBQ from 12.30pm to 1.15pm at Bairnsdale Riverine Street, Doghole Access Road, Bairnsdale.

The focus of Weedbuster Week across Australia this year is "Fighting the Weed Invaders," said Ms Gillies.

"Weedbuster Week will help raise the awareness of weed issues in the community, and promote the excellent work that volunteers achieve by minimising the impact of pest plants and addressing land degradation issues."

Weeds cost Australia more than $4 billion every year and are one of the greatest causes in bio-diversity loss. They reduce agricultural productivity, displace native plants and eliminate the natural habitat and food sources for native animals.

The events associated around Weedbuster Week have been arranged through a joint partnership with East Gippsland Shire Council, Parks Victoria, Department of Primary Industries, Department of Sustainability and Environment, the East Gippsland Landcare Network and the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
