Liberals To Provide Broiler Farm Consistency

A Liberal Government will end the uncertainty and ambiguity of the current Broiler Farm Code, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said the Bracks Government had continually intervened to thwart the application of its own Broiler Farm Code it revised in 2001.

The Victorian and Civil Administrative Tribunal found these interferences to be unlawful, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in the Victorian meat industry and current and potential stakeholders.

"A Liberal Government will provide certainty for the future of broiler farm applications by ending this interference which is pushing potential investors interstate," Mr Davis said.

"We will revise the Broiler Farm Code, agree on an industry development strategy and stick to it.

"A Liberal Government will ensure multiple applications are aggregated for assessment and ensure that compliance with the code in rural zones provides project assurance.

"If future ministerial interventions on broiler farm applications are warranted, a Liberal Government will ensure these interventions respect code compliance."

Mr Davis said the chicken meat industry was important to Victoria, and a Liberal Government would do everything possible to support the further development of this industry.

"The Liberal Party supports the development of broiler farms, but only in appropriate locations," he said.

"For this reason, it is important that the Broiler Farm Code is a stringent planning document that is adhered to.

"The Bracks Government uses the code as a loose guideline, but intervenes in certain applications to look after their Labor mates.

"A Liberal Government’s revised code would protect the chicken meat industry, surrounding landholders and the environment."
