New $100,000 pipe puts better water on the map

WATER supplies to the Coronet Bay, Grantville and Corinella area are due for a massive upgrade in February – thanks to a soon-to-be-installed length of pipe.

The 1.6km stretch of transmission pipe will improve the reliability and quality of water supplied to the three communities.

The $100,000 project will see a 150mm pipe linking two separate mains, forming the last part of a triangular layout that means water can flow from either direction.

Westernport Water’s Managing Director David Mawer explained: "We can now isolate either of the two mains without interrupting supply. Previously, we had to turn water off if there was any stoppage along the two separate mains.

"However, by putting the connection pipeline in, it means that if there are any problems we can back feed water in from the other end.

"It should mean significantly fewer interruptions to supply because we can back feed water to all customers in that region."

He added: "It should also improve water quality because we will be able to flush the pipes more effectively.

"We are also anticipating improvements in water pressure in the area."

Mr Mawer said that the previous pipeline layout had been "a significant problem" for residents of the three communities – and for the water authority trying to ensure uninterrupted water supplies.

"It’s all due to the fact that these customers were on the end of two long supply lines. The improved connectivity will definitely help," he said.

The additional pipeline will have taken two months to install.

The works were an add-on to the bore drilling project underway nearby. Mr Mawer said: "While we were putting in the connecting pipe for the new bores, we took the decision to spend the extra money and install this additional pipe. We are thinking ahead, and that’s we way we like doing business."
