Action Plans For Bass Coast

Reviewed youth and disability action plans provide new ways forward for Council.

By Bass Coast - 29th July 2011 - Back to News

The Youth Action Plan 2011-2015 and the Disability Action Plan 2011-2015 were adopted at The Shire’s Council’s Meeting held on 27 July 2011.
Both of these Plans provide a new focus for the way in which Council will assist specific sectors of the community.

Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente explained that the new plans will also be a valuable resource for organisations seeking information to support funding opportunities or to lobby for appropriate service improvements.

"The new Bass Coast Shire Council Youth Action Plan brings together a wealth of research, and outlines consultation that has taken place with people aged 12 to 24 years,"said Mr Piasente.

"It also outlines the reviewed role of Council in promoting opportunities for young people in areas of leadership, advocacy and youth engagement.

A majority of youth services in Bass Coast are resourced through either state or federal funding and are run by community or not for profit organisations.

"Council provides leadership and coordination of services for young people in the Shire," said Mr Piasente. "We either fund or manage facilites and services in the Shire such as sport, recreation, arts and leisure, education and employment. We also focus on access and equity, advocacy and youth engagement.

Mr Piasente said the new Disability Action Plan 2011-2015 provides Council with a strategic direction on matters affecting people with disability in our community.

"It builds on the important groundwork from previous Plans, and clearly articulates Council’s commitment to principles of access and inclusion for people with disability," Mr Piasente said.

"Significant legislative and policy changes have occurred at international, federal, state, local government and community levels, since the last plan was drafted in 2007.

"The Plan is informed by consultation with stakeholders, including people with disability, their families, carers, service providers, and Council officers. "It outlines five main objectives and will be monitored by Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee which includes community members with a disability or experience of disability," Mr Piasente said.
