Barry Sheene Ride On The WayThe fourth annual Barry Sheene Memorial Ride will take place on Thursday, 14 September 2006. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 28th August 2006 - Back to News The Barry Sheene Memorial Ride has become a highlight of the Phillip Island Motorcycle Grand Prix. Last year, over 900 riders took place in the ride from Bairnsdale to Phillip Island.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said similar numbers are expected for this year’s event, which has reached its capacity.
"The Ride has grown every year, its popularity is unprecedented," said Mr Angarane.
"It has now reached its maximum size for running safely."
The Ride leaves from Bairnsdale at 10 am and travels 300 km through Morwell, Leongatha, Wonthaggi and San Remo before arriving at Phillip Island that afternoon. It has been confirmed that a number of Channel 10 celebrities and V8 drivers will lead the Ride.
This year, Mr Angarane advised, there will be some changes to the route the riders take.
"Traditionally, the Ride has finished with controlled lap of the Grand Prix Circuit," said Mr Angarane.
"This year, the riders will leave the Circuit and head into Cowes.
"While the riders will still congregate in San Remo, Bass Coast’s Mayor will this year welcome the riders when they arrive in Cowes."
Mr Angarane said there were a number of activities going on in Cowes to celebrate the arrival of the riders.
"There is a rider training promotion taking place on the Cowes Esplanade to coincide with the Sheene ride," explained Mr Angarane.
"There will be two rider demonstration sessions of around 25 minutes each, at 4pm and 5pm.
"The demonstrations are being provided by Honda, MotoGP, HART and TAC.
"There will also be a barbeque provided for spectators and riders who want to come along and enjoy the event."
The riders are due to arrive in Cowes just before 5pm. Traffic management provisions will be put in place on the day.
Any money raised by the Barry Sheene Memorial Ride will go to Lifeline Gippsland, the official charity of the 2006 GMC Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.
