Seeking members for Population Analysis Steering Committee

Wellington Shire is keen to establish a steering committee representative of a broad cross-section of the local community, as it looks to develop and implement a far-reaching action plan tackling key population issues affecting the shire’s future.

By Wellington Shire Council - 14th January 2005 - Back to News

This follows on from recent shire-wide public consultation on the council’s groundbreaking Population Analysis. Funded by the council and Department of State and Regional Development, and carried out on Wellington Shire’s behalf by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR), this considered such areas as population ageing and youth opportunities, along with other town-specific issues.

Wellington became the first municipality to participate in this Victorian Government initiative - undertaken to help the council plan and prioritise strategies and actions to address the impact demographic shifts will have on all aspects of the local economy and services over the long-term.

Members are now being sought from the local community for the Wellington Population Analysis Steering Committee, including residents and representatives from business, industry, tourism, agriculture, education, health and community services.

Anyone interested in participating should contact the council’s Community Development Manager, Glenys Butler, on 1300 366 244 for more information. The deadline for applications is Friday, 18 February and it is hoped to have the committee established by mid March.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "The Population Analysis shows that the present shift in our population will undoubtedly have an impact shire-wide, affecting such sectors as local business, agriculture and tourism, as well as education, health and community services.

"It’s vital that the community are actively involved in the steps that need to be taken to prepare for Wellington’s future and so we are keen to establish a steering committee that is truly representative of its various dimensions and needs. The reward for members is a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that you are contributing in no small way to help preserve and enhance Wellington for future generations."
