Neighbourhood Watch Must Be Retained

The Nationals have expressed concern at reports that the successful Neighbourhood Watch program may be axed.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province, Peter Hall, said the program played a critical role in maintaining community safety and increasing Victorian’s awareness about crime and crime prevention.

"I am deeply concerned about recent media reports that Victoria Police are reviewing the Neighbourhood Watch Program," Mr Hall said.

"I would hate to think that this program is going to go the same way as the equally successful and well-regarded Police in Schools program and be axed by the Bracks Government.

"Both programs play a critical role in fostering links between police officers and the broader community and ultimately help prevent crime in this State.

"The Bracks Government will stand condemned if both of these programs are lost under its watch.

Mr Hall said the Neighbourhood Watch program had been running for 22 years and had a long history of widespread community support.

"Neighbourhood Watch is a community based crime prevention program that aims to reduce the incidence of preventable crime such as burglary and theft as well as promoting closer community ties.

"Membership of Neighbourhood Watch has grown over the life of the program to some 40,000 dedicated volunteers and the program has now been adopted nationwide.

"The program educates residents on security and safety and the reporting of suspicious incidents to the Police. Volunteers with the program are involved in a host of activities, from delivering newsletters, to marking property at schools, libraries, shopping centres and police stations and participating in blood collection drives.

"Volunteers work in close cooperation with nominated Police Liason Officers, who attend area meetings and provide details about local crime statistics and tips for improving home and neighbourhood safety.

"Efforts have also been made to extend the program to Victoria’s multicultural population, with information brochures being produced in a range of languages.

"Neighbourhood Watch is an excellent program that deserves the continuing support of both the State Government and Victoria Police. I call on the Police Minister to back the program and ensure it will continue into the long term.
