Two men facing illegal shark fishing charges

Illegally taking a grey shark at Corner Inlet are expected to be charge by two men from South Gippsland.

Two men from South Gippsland are expected to be charged on summons with illegally taking a grey nurse shark at Corner Inlet. Following a short investigation, Fisheries Officers and Victoria Police executed two search warrants in Koonwarra and Welshpool. Grey nurse sharks are listed as threatened and are protected, under both Victorian and Commonwealth legislation.

In another matter, Fisheries officers apprehended a Venus Bay man allegedly breaching a court-imposed fishing ban prescribed under the Fisheries Act. The man’s original ban prohibited him from recreational fishing after he was caught taking a large amount of squid for sale near Mornington.

Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing activity is urged to call 13 FISH (13 34 74).
