Shared Path Construction UpdateWorks are continuing on Stage 1 of the shared footpath that, once completed, will stretch from Anderson to San Remo. By Bass Coast - 29th April 2014 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s $1.1 million project involves 5.5k of gravel shared pathway along the Phillip Island Tourist Road, from Potters Hill Road and connecting with the existing rail trail at Anderson.
The overall project is funded through grants from the Victorian Government Regional Growth Fund via the Local Government Infrastructure Program and will be funded over four years, with the design and investigation completed in 2011/12.
Construction of the pathway is estimated to take three years to complete.
Council’s Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, said there had been some confusion in the community about where the path would start and finish, with the project being completed in stages.
"The shared path has always been a planned staged work in progress in conjunction with numerous authorities," Ms Sist said.
"The boardwalk stage, in front of the Silverwater Resort, is in the final planning phase, and is envisaged that the tender will be advertised soon.
"The section that is planned to connect to existing paths in San Remo is to be formally constructed as part of new subdivisions; however, we will most probably need to construct a temporary connection if the developments are delayed."
Ms Sist said works have paused over the busier summer months, but this was intentional.
"As a part of the risk assessment plan, works along Phillip Island tourist road were temporarily halted during increased traffic periods to and from San Remo and Phillip Island to minimise the impact on road users during peak periods," Ms Sist said.
The shared path has been designed and engineered in accordance with current standards and is supported by Department of Transport, Bicycle Victoria and local bicycle groups.
The material used for the surface is the equivalent to the material used on the rail trail from Wonthaggi to Anderson.
Normal planned maintenance programs will ensure that required service level is retained.
Once complete, the path will be a shared pedestrian path, while high speed cyclist should utilise the road shoulder and follow relevant road regulations.
Supervision of young children utilising pathway networks within the Bass Coast Shire is encouraged regardless of path location or category.
