A Super Race for Supercars

V8 Supercars will be roaring onto Phillip Island from 16 to 18 September for the L&H500 kicking off the V8 Supercars 'Season of Endurance'.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the Supercars event brings a strong economic benefit to the region and is very important for local business at what is normally a very quiet time of the year.

"Economic impact studies carried out this year concluded that last year’s event brought in excess of $15 million into Bass Coast and the region.

"For the first time in 2010 we held a community welcome event in Cowes. It was so well received that it will be back bigger and better in 2011," said Mr Angarane.

This year there will be a community welcome on the evening of Thursday, 15 September in a section of Thompson Avenue in Cowes. Several V8 Supercars, all of the V8 Supercar drivers and several support category drivers and vehicles from the Porsche Carrera Cup, Formula Ford and Aussie Racing Cars will be attending.

Mr Angarane said it was a terrific opportunity for people to meet drivers, get autographs and some photos with selected V8 Supercar show cars.

Trackside action

Last year, wet weather impacted on crowd numbers over the three days but race organisers are expecting a bigger crowd this year.

"Significant improvements have taken place at the circuit and its surrounds since last year and this will improve the experience for event goers," Mr Angarane said.

"Promoters of the V8 Supercars have been working hard to make the L&H500 a family oriented event with a great range of on and off track entertainment for all ages."

Children under 12 years of age accompanying a paying adult will be admitted free and activities such as the Disney Cars 2 Mack Truck Tour all contribute to the family focus.

Similarly, patrons under 15 years of age travelling with an adult on the shuttle bus to the circuit will travel free of charge. Mr Angarane said the free entertainment in Cowes over the weekend will encourage event goers to patronise local business.

"This creates a greater involvement between the community and the event," Mr Angarane explained.

"Council has also worked with the event organisers to put together a plan to manage the traffic on the weekend.

"Significant planning has taken place to keep the impact of traffic on the community to a minimum and to help with easy acess to and from the circuit.

"Even so, drivers need to be aware of additional traffic and take heed of changed traffic conditions on the roads over this weekend," said Mr Angarane.
