Plastic Bag Challenge Is A WinnerThe environment is not the only winner in the Cowes Plastic Bag Free Challenge. Three local residents – Irene Spencer, Denise Mitchell and Kellie Nichols have also been rewarded. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th October 2006 - Back to News A prize draw was offered for returning the Community Survey in relation to Cowes becoming a plastic bag free township. The Survey was used to gauge the level of support for the campaign. Winners were announced on 22 September, with first prize going to Irene Spencer, second to Denise Mitchell and third to Kellie Nichols.
First prize winner, Irene Spencer is a big supporter of the plastic bag free concept and uses greenbags whenever she shops.
"I keep them in the boot of my car, so they are always handy," said Irene.
Irene’s prize is a helicopter ride from Phillip Island Helicopters.
"I’m so excited to win the helicopter ride," 71 year old Irene said.
Other prizes included a Nokia Mobile Phone generously donated by Australia Post Cowes, and a $50 Coles Voucher donated by Coles, Cowes.
The Cowes Plastic Bag Free Challenge was launched on 9 September 2006. The Phillip Island Retail and Business Association are leading the Plastic Bag Free Challenge and received a State Government grant through Sustainability Victoria to undertake the initiative.
The campaign focus is to educate retailers, community members and visitors about the impact of plastic bags on the environment and the alternative options that are available. The campaign aims to have 100% of retailers in the Cowes CBD Plastic Bag Free by June 2007.
