Fruit Fly Outbreak In Bairnsdale

An outbreak of Queensland fruit fly has been detected in West Bairnsdale.

By Department of Primary Industries - 24th April 2006 - Back to News

The Victorian Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will begin an eradication program within a 200 meter radius of the detection site.

Regional Plant Standards Officer, Ms Lavinia Zirnsak, is seeking cooperation from householders to prevent the pest from spreading and impacting on horticultural industry in the region.

"A leaflet describing the eradication campaign has been delivered to households in the immediate area which includes Magnolia Drive, Taylor Street, Dreverman Street, Morgan Street, Alvin Court, Karee Court and Henderson Court," Ms Zirnsak said.

Residents with inquiries or to report infested fruit should contact 1800 084 881.

"DPI baiting teams will be visiting residential properties to apply bait into the canopy of suitable trees to attract and kill fruit flies."

The baiting teams will need to visit household yards once a week for a period of up to nine weeks.

The bait will not harm householders, pets or plants. Householders can help by providing easy access to their backyards and by not removing any home grown fruit from their property unless it is treated through cooking. Unwanted fruit should be picked and sealed in a plastic bag and left in the sun for at least three days to kill any maggots in the fruit. Afterwards, the bag of unwanted fruit can be disposed of in the garbage.

"Growers located within 15 kilometres of the fruit fly detection will be required to treat host fruit prior to movement to sensitive markets including Melbourne, South Australia and Western Australia," Ms Zirnsak said.

Growers located within 80 kilometres of the detection will need to treat fruit prior to movement to Tasmania.

Growers located within 15 and 80 kilometres of the detection should contact the Fruit Fly hotline 1800 119 498 as soon as possible to seek further information on the requirements to move host fruit to local and interstate markets.
