Hand-Picked a personal glimpse into the diversity of the Gallery collection

Hand-Picked showcases a selection of works chosen from the collection by Latrobe Regional Gallery staff. Selected works include sculpture, print-making, glass, painting and photography, celebrating the diversity of the LRG Collection.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said the curatorial brief for this exhibition required staff to reflect upon their favourite works from the collection.

"Giving complete freedom to LRG staff, there were no restrictions placed on what could be chosen, resulting in a varied and distinct exhibition of works which gives a glimpse into the wide ranging tastes of LRG staff," Dr Themann said.

Staff have written short descriptions, which accompany the exhibition. These describe their choices in detail. For example Maree Adams, LRG’s Customer Service Officer, writing about Michael Gallop’s Nostalgia:

"Being an animal lover I just couldn’t go past this sculpture. I love the curiosity the artist has captured on the chimps face – it makes you want to open the box to see what is inside!"

Nicole Brindley, Education and Public Programs Officer chose Quiet Conversations by Sarah Dingwall, and noted:

"I am drawn to pieces that are obscure – unknown treasures that often sit on the fringe of the popular opinion. I also have a fascination with scientific artefacts, anthropology collections, cabinet of curiosities, curios and memento mori, so this piece spoke to me on all of those levels. We acquired this work in 2009, and it has not been exhibited until now. When I contemplate the work I am made aware of my mortality, through the symbolic use of butterfly wings and their transformative nature and fragility."

The exhibition brings together a variety of subject matter, materials and themes, whilst revealing a little bit about each staff member’s personality. Hand-Picked includes artists such as George Baldessin, Noel Counihan, Michael Gallop, Clarice Beckett, Geoffrey Dupree, Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison.

Hand-Picked runs until 22 January 2017
