Kongwak Road Partial Upgrade

A road upgrade means that school buses and motorists will now have a safer trip along the narrow and windy Kongwak Road.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 7th August 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the upgrade was part of a program to improve rural transport routes within the Shire.

"Kongwak Road created real safety concerns, particularly for the school buses that travelled that route," said Mr Piasente.

"The road has undergone a partial transformation. It has been widened and the roadside has been cleared to help improve safety for all the vehicles using the road," explained Mr Piasente.

"Drainage of the road has also improved as a result of this work and there has been some minor road patching."

The Kongwak Road upgrade is funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery scheme. Approximately 1.7kms of roadworks east of the bridge towards Bena Kongwak Road are partially completed.

"We started work in late April and hope to finish the road overlay works when the warmer weather arrives," said Mr Piasente.

"Council has also committed funding from the Roads to Recovery program to improve another 800 metres of road, west of the bridge crossing towards Glen Alvie Road.

"All the work on Kongwak Road will be finished by March 2010."
