Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Day Member for Morwell Russell Northe today spoke in Parliament on the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Day and recognised those who sadly lost their lives. By Russell Northe - 23rd August 2013 - Back to News Mr Northe said "On Sunday 18 August I had the opportunity to attend a local Vietnam Veterans Day Service at ANZAC Memorial Park Traralgon in marking the 51 years that have passed since Australia signed on to join allied forces in the fight against a rising communist North Vietnam.
"The day also commemorated the 4th anniversary of the Long Tan battle which demonstrated our troops resolve, resilience and bravery," Mr Northe said.
"Six local soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War, and I commend the Moe, Morwell and Traralgon RSLs for conducting such a moving and wonderful service."
Mr Northe said the six local soldiers Wayne Blanck, Adrian Rich, Barry Logan, Robert Grist, Joseph Maicola and Allan Lloyd who served in Vietnam and sadly lost their lives were recognised at the service.
"The 60,000 Australian army, navy and air force personnel who served in Vietnam fought with bravery, distinction and commitment.
"The commemorative service also marked the 4th anniversary of Long Tan, a battle which is synonymous with Vietnam Veterans Day," Mr Northe said.
"The service and sacrifice of Victoria’s Vietnam veterans – amid a backdrop of controversy surrounding conscription under the national service scheme – would forever be remembered and appreciated."
Mr Northe said "Our nation is eternally grateful for the courageous efforts displayed by our Vietnam veterans. They form part of our country’ history and are the very fabric of what defines us as a nation.
"For those ware veterans no longer with us, their legacy remains through the stories they shared with loved ones, who represent them at commemorations like today."
