Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Philip Davis said today the Liberal Party was committed to assisting those who have been overcome with a gambling addiction, while taking preventative measures to curtail the numbers of Victorians becoming gambling addicts.

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would dedicate funds from the Community Support Fund (CSF) to establish a new Responsible Gambling Trust, which would be administered by VicHealth.

"The CSF was set up to make sure a proportion of revenue from poker machines was spent on worthwhile projects," he said.

"Hotels and members of the Australian Hotels Association are the major contributors to this fund.

"Under a Liberal Government, all funding from the CSF intended for counseling, research, education and other gambling-related services will be chanelled into a new Responsible Gambling Trust."

Mr Davis said VicHealth would administer money from the Trust, to resource gambling initiatives including education, counselling and rehabilitation programs.

VicHealth will also work on strategies to reduce problem gambling.

"A Liberal Government will task VicHealth to devise and undertake appropriate and independent communications campaign to promote responsible gambling."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would also re-establish the former Independent Research Panel to undertake research into gambling.

"The Bracks Labor Government abolished this panel once research began to show that gambling addictions were growing in Victoria," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will accept the findings of the Independent Research Panel and use them to implement problem gambling programs that are based on accurate and specific research."

Mr Davis said while a Liberal Government would continue to allow gambling in Victoria as a legitimate recreation, but will do everything it can to assist those with gambling addictions and prevent problem gambling in the future.
