Gallery Director, Jacqui Hemsley said that Mr Elkington uses elements of Roman, Egyptian, Greek, Indian, Persian, Japanese and Gothic ornaments and patterns in his work.
"The artist spent some time in Egypt in 2001 which has enabled him to use photographs and his experiences as a source of inspiration. This intensified his appreciation of Islamic art and architecture and the desert landscape," Ms Hemsley explained.
"Completing his Masters of Arts at Monash University, Gippsland Campus in 2003, Mr Elkington has continued to develop his work to focus on the aspects of interior versus exterior, shadow and light, perspective, shapes and details along with abstract and surreal forms," Ms Hemsley said.
"The exhibition contains 24 oil paintings varying in scale. According to the artist, his work shows echoes of history and the resonances of past lives, relationships and tragedies permeate the supposed emptiness of the desert landscape, leaving the viewer to contemplate on the themes of love, hope, loss, isolation, ecstasy, tragedy, celebration, melancholy and reflection," Ms Hemsley concluded.
