Gallery funding announcement applauded

Funding to complete the Latrobe Regional Gallery’s redevelopment

By Latrobe City Council - 13th December 2000 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council and the Latrobe Regional Gallery Committee of Management have both welcomed the State Government’s announcement of funding to complete the Latrobe Regional Gallery’s redevelopment.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning said that the news was being met with great excitement not only by the arts community, but by Gallery visitors from all over Gippsland.

“The Gallery’s Committee have created a superb collection over the years, but it has long been recognised that the existing facility would never be able to house the collection adequately,” Cr Hanning explained.

“This announcement indicates that the State Government recognises that this community deserves a good gallery, and that it is prepared to ensure the cultural needs and aspirations of this community are enriched,” Cr Hanning said

“I am particularly pleased with this announcement for two reasons. Firstly, as Mayor and a Councillor representing Latrobe, I am naturally delighted that this municipality will be able to present to visitors and the Gippsland Community, an admirable and extensive regional collection in a facility second to none.

“Secondly however, as an artist myself, I sincerely believe that a ‘sense of place’ for Latrobe in the wider arts community will be the result”.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Committee of Management Chairperson, Gordon Duncan, described the announcement of funding to complete the full redevelopment of the Latrobe Regional Gallery as ‘excellent news’.

“The Government is to be congratulated for their forward thinking on this issue,” Mr Duncan said.

“It is not only a major step forward for the arts community, but a big opportunity for the whole of the Latrobe region,” Mr Duncan said.

“This will be a big economic boost as well as an arts boost. Similar redevelopments to regional galleries in Ballarat and Bendigo saw visitor numbers increase two or threefold. We expect the same result when work on our gallery is complete.

“This means that we could see upwards of forty to fifty thousand people coming to the redeveloped Latrobe Regional Gallery. It would become the Latrobe Valley’s major tourist attraction,” Mr Gordon said.

Mr Duncan thanked Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Tony Hanning, for the support of the City, and his personal efforts in successfully promoting the benefits of the Gallery redevelopment to the State Government.

“The Director of the Latrobe Regional Gallery, Mr Rodney Scherer must also be thanked for the many hours he has put into this project,” Mr Duncan said.

“However, most thanks should go to the many volunteers who have worked hard over three decades to build the Gallery from nothing to one of the region’s most significant cultural assets,” Mr Duncan concluded.
