Wonthaggi Town Entrance Project Boosted

The announcement by the Victorian Government of $12 million to fund the upgrade to key roads in Wonthaggi will impact on the White Road Special Charge Scheme.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 21st April 2009 - Back to News

The White Road Scheme was originally approved by Council in February 2008. That decision was upheld by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, with a number of modifications.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said the desalination project had increased the size of the town entrance project.

"The extra traffic from the desalination plant construction means that a much larger intersection needs to be constructed at Lower Powlett Road," explained Mr Piasente.

"Council was never satisfied with Vic Roads’ original contribution to the White Road Scheme, given that this was a highway and major town entrance.

"We continued to lobby the government and argued that the impact of the desalination plant meant the government had an even greater obligation to contribute to the project.

"We are very pleased to have successfully gained extra funding for the White Road Scheme."

Mr Piasente said Council now needed to determine how the additional funding would be incorporated into the Special Charge Scheme costs.

"Once this has been determined we will contact residents in writing to let them know any changes to the Special Charge Scheme costs.

"It will be great to finally see works commence and the safety and appearance of the Dalyston entrance into Wonthaggi improved," continued Mr Piasente.

The successful tender for the White Road Project will be announced shortly, with construction expected to begin in June.
