Traveling down the digital highway

Telecommuting - work of tomorrow

By John Riddle - 20th December 2000 - Back to News

Breakthroughs in technology now allow many employees to telecommute from the comfort of their own homes. Cell phones, fax machines, high speed Internet access and other gadgets now make it easy for more than 8 million people to telecommute full-time in the United States.

In two years, that figure is expected to grow to about 13.5 million, according to research from The Gallup Organization and the Opinion Research Corporation.

Of course, everyone thinks that telecommuting is great. And who wouldn't, with these advantages:
  • Flexible schedule - Employees can usually work around family obligations.
  • Reduced stress - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ranks stress among the top 10 reasons people miss work. But telecommuters usually face less stress when working at home.
  • No commuting - In a recent survey, this was ranked as the top benefit of telecommuting.
