Using a video link from the Bairnsdale Library to the awards dinner that will be held in Melbourne’s Federation Square on Monday 18 October, authors Hannie Rayson and Arnold Zable will announce winners of two major prizes. The announcement will be made at the Library and simultaneously seen live at the Awards dinner in the fashionable Zinc restaurant. Hannie Rayson is award-winning authors whose plays include Hotel Sorrento, Competitive Tenderness and Falling from Grace. She has also written for television programs, including the highly successful Seachange. Her latest work – Inheritance – is a funny, sprawling saga depicting three generations of a farming family as they battle over who’s the rightful heir to the farm. A former lecturer in the arts faculty of Melbourne University whose books include Jewels and Ashes, Café Scheherazade and The Fig Tree, Arnold Zable was born in New Zealand, and grew up in Carlton. His latest novel, Scraps of Heaven, follows the stories of migrant families settling in Carlton in the 1950s. The event at the library is part of the State Library of Victoria’s Writers on the Road program, which is making its fourth visit to Bairnsdale. As well as making the award announcements, Rayson and Zable will discuss the topic ‘Families, Home and Australia’ Their talk will talk begin after the first live cross to Melbourne at 7.30pm, and the Awards announcement will take place just after 9pm. Supper will follow the free-of-charge event for which reservations can be made by ringing the Bairnsdale Library.
