Endangered Flax-Lily Planted In At Eric Lubcke ReserveAround 800 seedlings of the nationally endangered matted flax-lily (Dianella amoena) were planted in Morwell on Tuesday 22 May to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. By Latrobe City - 4th June 2012 - Back to News Matted flax-lily is only found in Victoria, and in 2010, there were estimated to be only 1400 plants remaining in about 120 locations.
Latrobe City Ward Councillor, Bruce Lougheed, said that the seedlings were planted into Eric Lubcke Yarra Gum Conservation Reserve by a working group.
"The group consisted of staff from Latrobe City Council, Latrobe Urban Landcare Group, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, GippsTAFE and Indigenous Design Environmental Services.
"Under a special arrangement, Council was able to collect seed from matted flax-lily plants that were found in Eric Lubcke Yarra Gum Conservation Reserve and in the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve. A large number of seedlings were then grown in the Council nursery.
"Investing time and effort to facilitate the survival of a nationally endangered species was a rewarding experience for the working group, and Latrobe City Council hopes to continue supporting the recovery of this special plant into the future," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed added that the Eric Lubcke Yarra Gum Conservation Reserve, which is located at the end of Maryvale Crescent in Morwell, was established 20 years ago to protect the rare Yarra gum (Eucalyptus yarraensis) that had been planted by Eric Lubcke.
"The reserve has proved to be an excellent location for protecting Yarra gum and in the last two years has also now become a location for protecting other species such as the matted flax-lily," Cr Lougheed concluded.
