School Crossing Made Safer At Tyers

Accessing Tyers Primary School is now safer and easier for students after a community project that focused on improving the school crossing was completed.

By Latrobe City - 28th March 2011 - Back to News

The school crossing on Tyers Road, which is frequently used by trucks, was made more accessible by widening the road leading to the crossing and pruning trees in the vicinity to heighten visibility; signage will also be improved in the area and a program will be held to help boost safety awareness.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the improvements were a great sign of the community working together to achieve a common goal.

"The accessibility issues at the crossing came to light after a Tyers community member, whose child attends the primary school and uses a wheelchair, commented on the difficulties of travelling to and from school.

"After assessing the crossing, Latrobe City Council resolved to seal an extra section of the road, replacing what was previously loose gravel, to allow pedestrians to travel a safer distance from traffic and to trim branches from some roadside trees that obstructed views," Cr White explained.

Galbraith Ward councillor, Sandy Kam, said that the project was a real community partnership with VicRoads, Victoria Police, Local State Member Russell Northe and Council all playing a significant role.

"VicRoads is in the process of improving all the signage surrounding the crossing, while Victorian Police will conduct a safety program in the area.

"Council will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the children, especially with the current changes to traffic flows due to the freeway closure.

"Road safety is an extremely important issue, especially near schools, and these new initiatives will help to ensure that students can travel to school safely," Cr Kam concluded.
