More than 20 local traders attended a food safety supervisor training course at the Cowes Cultural Centre recently. The session was organised by Bass Coast Shire Council to help local businesses comply with State Government legislation about safe food handling procedures.

"The training was conducted by Melbourne City Council’s Training Unit," said Carl Gheller, Environmental Health Officer with Council. "The training covered competency standard for Food Safety Supervisors.

As part of the Victorian legislation, all food business proprietors must submit a food safety program to their local government authority by 31 December 2002. Each food safety program lists all the potential hazards of handling and preparing food, how to control and monitor these hazards and what actions will be taken if things go wrong. As part of their food safety program, proprietors must nominate a food safety supervisor.

The training at Cowes resulted in all 20 applicants becoming certified food safety supervisors.

For more information about food safety programs or any other environmental health issues, contact Council’s Community Protection Unit on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311.
