Photographers Left in the Dark

Weeks of uncertainty for the photography businesses.

By Portal Admin - 12th October 2020 - Back to News

Member for Morwell Russell Northe has today called upon the State Government to provide clarity for photography businesses given many weeks of uncertainty for the sector.

Mr Northe said he had been approached by a number of local photographers in recent times who were seeking information on what is allowable or not under Third Step rules in Regional Victoria.

For example, the basic rules of whether a person or persons are required to wear a face covering whilst being photographed is very unclear.

"Businesses want to obey by the rules; however, this is very difficult when conflicting advice is provided by the authorities" Mr Northe said.

"I have on behalf of many local photographers sought directions from the Government on this issue, but no formal advice has been forthcoming at this point" said Mr Northe.

In a further blow to the sector the State Government has also banned school photos being taken by an external photographer in Regional Schools.

"In an already disrupted school year, it is incredibly disappointing that photos by professional photographers can’t be undertaken in Regional Schools" Mr Northe said.

"This is an important aspect in one’s history and it makes no sense to ban this activity when it can be undertaken in a COVID-Safe way" added Mr Northe.

"Of course, many school graduations will be occurring in the not too distant future and for important moments of history to not be captured by qualified photographers is difficult to comprehend" Mr Northe continued.

"The Governments directive really is impacting businesses, students, families and school communities and I ask that the Minister urgently reconsider this decision and allow photographers to capture special school and student memories as they have done for many decades" Mr Northe concluded.
