Support For Tenants

Representatives from the Tenants’ Union of Victoria will be visiting Wonthaggi to meet with any resident who is unsure of their tenancy rights or feels they have been unfairly treated in their rental situation.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 4th February 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council CEO, Allan Bawden, said residents need to be able to express their concerns and have any queries addressed with a professional from the Tenants’ Union.

"We’ve worked with the Tenants’ Union of Victoria to make a representative available so that residents in Bass Coast can discuss any tenancy issues with them," said Mr Bawden.

"This is an opportunity for residents to meet in private to discuss their concerns.

"There has been a lot of coverage in the local media recently about tenants allegedly being treated unfairly.

"This is a way we can ensure that local tenants are being treated fairly and if they’re not, give them an avenue to rectify their situation," explained Mr Bawden.

Mr Bawden said rentals across Australia have increased, which is now impacting on low income earners trying to access affordable rentals properties in Bass Coast.

"The Housing Affordability Study we recently completed showed that rents have been increasing since 2006 along with the median house prices," said Mr Bawden

"The median house price in Bass Coast is just under $280,000 which aligns with that of neighbouring municipalities of Cardinia and Casey.

"This is sure to cause some financial stress on our low income households," explained Mr Bawden.

A representative from the Tenants’ Union will be available at the Bass Coast Civic Centre, 76 McBride Avenue, Wonthaggi on Tuesday, 16 February. Bookings are essential. Contact Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) to make an appointment.
