Draft Plans Will Guide Strategic Development For Coastal Towns

Draft Settlement Papers have been prepared for the townships of Mallacoota, Gipsy Point, Bemm River, Marlo, Lake Tyers Beach, Metung, Nungurner and Eagle Point.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 16th January 2006 - Back to News

These are documents that set out future plans for the development of the towns and include concepts and ideas for the future of each location.

East Gippsland Shire’s Group Manager Community, Kate Nelson, said the papers follow exhaustive community consultation processes that began earlier in 2005.

"Since then and following the documentation and analysis of a wide range of information, the Draft Settlement Papers have been prepared and are now available for comment," she said.

Ms Nelson said that a Strategy Plan had also been prepared for each town that proposes a township boundary, Indicates future growth areas or limitations, highlights priority areas for upgrade and improvement and identifies key principles that should be applied to future development.

This is the latest stage of the Coastal Townships Design Framework Project that was begun jointly by East Gippsland Shire Council, Wellington Shire Council and the Department of Sustainability and Environment more than twelve months ago.

Ms Nelson said that in each town at least one Master Plan is to be prepared for particular ‘priority areas’.

"These will provide Council and the community with a concept plan for the future development or upgrade of specific parts of each town and feedback will also being sought before proceeding to the preparation of detailed plans.

Ms Nelson said that to ensure the each community was fully informed newsletters that detail the overall vision for each town, the key outcomes of the community consultation and an explanation of the key objectives that will guide future development principles and strategies, had been prepared.

She said that copies of the draft Settlement Papers and Strategy Plans that echoed the extensive community consultation undertaken so far would be on display until 31 January 2006 at the nearest council office facility:

  • Eagle Point - Paynesville Library/Business Centre;
  • Marlo and Bemm River - Orbost Library/Business Centre;
  • Marlo, Metung, Lake Tyers Beach and Nungurner; Lakes Entrance Library/Business Centre;
  • Bemm River - Bemm River Community Centre;
  • Mallacoota and Gipsy Point - Mallacoota Outreach Centre.

"They can also be viewed on the Shire website and we will welcome feedback from each community to confirm the priorities identified in the process before we begin the detailed preparation of the final plan for the townships," Ms Nelson said.

Plans for Lakes Entrance and Paynesville will also be released for public comment before Easter.
