Traffic School Encourages Riders Of All AbilitiesBy Latrobe City Council - 3rd August 2005 - Back to News With the Tour of Gippsland cycling event coming through Latrobe City this week, the sport of cycling is in the public eye. The health benefits of recreational cycling are well known too and here in Latrobe City people of all abilities can access the fun and health benefits with the three unique hand-cranked bikes that are available for hire at the Hazelwood Power Traffic School in Morwell.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that the hand-powered tricycles provided physical activity and recreation for, but not limited to, people with various movement disabilities.
"The objective is to provide a vehicle that is fun to ride and gives people the joy and freedom of riding a tricycle as well as providing encouragement for them to participate in healthy, physical activity," Cr Lougheed explained.
"These tricycles are mainly targeted for people who have limited or no use of their legs. They require the rider to have moderate upper body strength and control. The riders will only need to use their upper body to power and steer the vehicle in order to exercise and have lots of fun," Cr Lougheed added.
"The tricycles were originally donated for use at the Traffic School in 2002 with International Power Hazelwood, Australian Paper and Latrobe City each donating one of the bikes. Having these bikes available for hire ensures that people of all abilities can be catered for at the Traffic School or for Bike Ed programs run within Latrobe City," Cr Lougheed concluded.
The Hazelwood Power Traffic School, in Brisbane Street, Morwell, caters for youngsters of all abilities. For more information on the facilities, or to hire the hand crank tricycles at very reasonable rates, please contact Latrobe City on 1300 367 700.
