Mayor’s Message

The Municipal Association of Victoria(MAV) and local councils have joined together to launch a major campaign to try and address the shortfall in funding for Community Care Services in Victoria.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 2nd August 2004 - Back to News

This funding is for caring for older people and people with disabilities in their homes and in their communities.

The Federal Government is responsible for 60% and the State Government 40% for this H.A.C.C. funding, but gradually over the years cost shifting has seen Local Government forced to pick up the shortfall.

Between 2000 and 2003 Local Government put $129 million into the scheme, and last year our Council’s financial contribution was $251,000.This year it is projected to be $292,957.

Due to continuous process improvements and Council’s contribution of over 4,000 extra home and community care hours we have no waiting list at the present time, but our concern is that with our projected population of residents over 60 years growing quite dramatically, this is a situation that cannot continue.

Caring for people in their homes is the preference of the vast majority of people and adequate State and Federal funding must be forthcoming to ensure that the needs of people in our community can be met in the future.
