A big crowd is expected for the 2012 Phillip Island Superbike World Championship, held 24-26 February.

There has been a lot of interest in the event and people who purchase three day tickets can once again get close to the action in what used to be a restricted area.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said three day ticketholders will have access to the ‘paddock’ on Friday morning meaning they can rub shoulders with riders and their teams.

"Event organisers are again opening up what was always a restricted area, so this is a fantastic opportunity for race goers," said Mr Piasente.

Traffic Management

Changes have been made to manage the peak traffic on Sunday, 26 February. In previous years post event, Back Beach Road has operated one way only between the GP Circuit and Phillip Island Road. This can create access problems for residents along this stretch of road. The road will remain as a two way thoroughfare this year.

The "Blue Line"operation will again be in place on Phillip Island Road between Back Beach Road and the Anderson roundabout for the event exit phase. This is expected to occur from around 3.30pm until the circuit clears at around 6.00pm.

Motorists are urged to take extra care during this operation and also through the major road works sites on Phillip Island Road and the Bass Highway.

Mr Piasente said people should try and stay off the roads around the circuit and the main roads to Phillip Island late Saturday and Sunday afternoons, when traffic is expected to be busiest.

"The Sunday traffic from Cowes to the circuit will be directed via Berrys Beach Road, with Gap Road being used for emergency services and shuttle bus access.

"We are also expecting heavy traffic from 8.00am to 11.00am and after 4.00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

"Generally we have a large number of motorbikes, which helps the traffic clear, but due to the road works it may still be slow and busy, so drivers and riders need to take care," said Mr Piasente.

Traffic arrangements to the circuit will be normal on Friday and Saturday.

Shuttle bus services will be in place for all three days of the event. There is no need to book and for more information, call Phillip Island Bus Lines on 5952 2500.

Night time Activities – Saturday, 25 February

Night time activities will run again this year in Cowes with free entertainment at the bottom end of Thompson Avenue.

This part of Thompson Avenue will be shut from mid afternoon on Saturday so the stage and band area can be set up.
The band stage will face up Thompson Avenue and existing licensed premises will extend onto the street.

This area will stay closed until after the entertainment activities finish around 11.00am.
