A record number of entrants are expected again this year with last year’s event being just under six hundred competitors strong. Council’s Special Events Coordinator, "Planning is well advanced and everything is in place to ensure a smooth running event with safety precautions confirmed. "The Water Police, Parks Victoria and Surf Life Saving Clubs together with air-reconnaissance and a Peninsula Helicopter will be on hand to ensure the safety of competitors." The Channel Challenge is the second leg of the Bass Coast Series, which includes the recent Cape Paterson Aquathon and the Cowes Classic, to be held on February 18. Mr Angarane said the associated market will be bigger than ever and the event organisers have secured the services of a 23 piece Police Show Band to help entertain the crowd. "These extra activities will provide a great atmosphere, helping visitors and locals enjoy the day with a full program of family activities. "The annual hole-in-one golf competition will again take place and the popular tug-of-war is also going to be happening," said Mr Angarane. The ‘Butt Free Bass Coast Campaign’ will also be making an impact, with street performers and the Melbourne Water Stormwater Education Trailer displaying how littered butts and other pollutants are easily washed into local beaches through stormwater drains. "The campaign is aimed at reducing the amount of cigarette butts littered on our streets by educating smokers to please ‘butt it then bin it’," said Mr Angarane.
