Ambyne Bridge Re-Opening Next Friday

The official re-opening of the restored Ambyne Bridge across the Deddick River north of Tubbut at Ambyne Crossing will take place next Friday.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th April 2005 - Back to News

Restored at a cost of almost $230,000, the historic bridge will be re-opened by Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe.

She will unveil a striking vitreous enamel panel that describes the timber bridge’s structure and history.

Funds for the bridge restoration have been provided by the 1998-99 National Estate grants program and the Department of the Environment and Heritage’s 2001-02 Cultural Heritage Projects Program

The East Gippsland Shire Council acted as manager of the restoration works and CEO Steve Kozlowski said that he hoped there would be a good turn up of locals who were welcome to attend.

The bridge was designed and built in 1934 by Victoria’s Country Roads Board (CRB) to service the needs of the young Ambyne pastoral settlement.

The structure enabled farm trucks with a gross weight of three tons to cross the river, thus linking settlers with the new CRB development road between Bonang and McKillops Bridge over the Snowy River.

It is one of only two surviving Victorian examples of suspension bridges constructed for this purpose and its combination of suspension and truss main span and simple-beam approach span is unique in Victoria.

The type of construction and the nature of materials used were largely determined by the historic flood that hit the Snowy River watershed in 1934 washing the deck from McKillops Bridge, over the nearby Snowy River, and hurling the wreckage downstream.

Some items were salvaged from the wreckage and combined with materials from a temporary suspension bridge on the Princes Highway at Orbost to build this bridge.

The bridge was closed to traffic in 1970 and by 1994 it had deteriorated to the point that the local community through the Tubbut Hall and Development Committee and under the leadership of Mrs Valerie Auer began to lobby for restoration funds.
