Don't Let It Go To Waste

Bass Coast residents will have recently received their 2011/12 Waste and Recycling Collection Calendar.

By Bass Coast - 8th July 2011 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Manager, David Owen, said the calendar has lots of useful information about what can be recycled, the yearly green waste amnesty period and how the hard waste collection system works.

"The calendar is a really useful resource for residents and holiday home owners," said Mr Owen.

"Lots of residents refer to it weekly to find out when their recycling collection is or whether or not an item can be recycled. For the last few years, we have been able to recycle plastic codes 1 – 7, however many residents are still not taking advantage of this.

"I’d like to remind all residents that recyclables should be put into the bins loose – not in a plastic bag. Plastic bags are still the number one cause of ‘contamination’ which is one of the biggest problems when recycling."

New charges at landfill and transfer stations

From 1 July, fees and charges at transfer station and landfill stations increased for some items.

"We’ve been forced to increase our fees at the transfer stations due to massive increases in the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) levies," said Mr Owen.

"The levies will cost Council over $300,000 this financial year and we have no choice but to pass some of these costs onto those who use the service."

Bags of waste have increased from $2.00 to $2.50 while you can expect to pay $8.00 more for a standard trailer of waste.
