Fire Danger Period OverRecent rains and cooler weather has prompted CFA Westernport to declare an early end to the Fire Danger Period. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 14th April 2010 - Back to News Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator, James Bremner, said that the end of the Fire Danger Period finished on Monday, 22 March instead of the original scheduled date of 1 May.
"Despite the Fire Danger Period being over, there are still requirements residents must meet when burning off on rural properties," said Mr Bremner
"Residents on rural properties must still be careful if they are going to have a fire on their property."
Council in partnership with the CFA has produced a set of Burning off Guidelines for Rural Property Owners in the Shire. The guidelines apply to open air burning on rural land out of the fire danger period and on days not of total fire ban.
"The aim of the guidelines is to protect the environment and lifestyle of all residents and visitors in Bass Coast," explained Mr Bremner
"It’s important for property owners to be aware of the guidelines. They are available from Council offices, the CFA or for download from Council’s website."
CFA Group Officer, Damien O’Connor, said the guidelines contain very important information such as making sure you have sufficient water on site and that you have cleared an appropriate fire break.
"If you are going to burn off make sure you contact your neighbours to let them know what is going on," explained Mr O’Connor
"You should also contact the CFA’s Burn off Notifications line on 1800 668 511 so you don’t get a fire truck turning up to your property and risk a fine."
Properties are required to be maintained throughout the year. Vegetation should be manageable and grass must not be longer than 30cm.
