and provide structures for fishing, birdwatching or just relaxing and admiring the surroundings.

Latrobe City councillor Darrell White said that the platforms have been funded by Latrobe City Council and through a generous donation from International Power Mitsui Loy Yang B power station.

"The idea behind the platforms came from the Mathison Park Advisory Committee in response to local residents who were keen to see improvements continuing in the area, which is a popular walking and picnic spot.

"The future development program includes the construction of a pathway on the eastern side of the lake which will link with the existing western pathway network and the installation of a second barbecue.

"The platforms provide easy access for wheelchairs and prams and can be used for fishing, watching the local birds or just relaxing and taking in the views," Cr White said.

"For anglers, these improvements are great news. Lake Hyland has been selected by the Department of Primary Industries as one of five premier sites within Victoria which will provide a better than average chance of catching a large fish. Coming online as a premier site in 2007/2008, the lake will be stocked with one kilogram fish by the Department of Primary Industries," Cr White added.

Cr White acknowledged the work of the Mathison Park Advisory Committee on behalf of the local community over a number of years in improving Lake Hyland’s amenity.

"The committee hopes that through the construction of these platforms and the stocking of large fish into the lake that this local facility will become an even more popular spot for recreation," Cr White concluded.
