Youth focus on fitness ‘n fun

Wellington Shire Council’s leisure services team is about to kick off a new youth fitness initiative aimed at boosting confidence and tackling childhood obesity.

By Wellington Shire Council - 12th July 2005 - Back to News

The initiative includes three programs - Teen Gym, Junior Circuit and Active Kids – and it starts at the O.A. Ruff Sports Stadium in Sale on 25 July.

Childhood obesity is increasing at alarming rates in Australia with one in five children or adolescents overweight or obese. It is predicted that 50 per cent of young Australians will be overweight or obese by 2020.

Experts say healthy eating strategies and increased activity are the best ways to trim down. At least 30 minutes of exercise and less than two hours of television viewing or computer games a day are recommended.

Wellington’s Administration and Marketing Co-ordinator Russell Thomas said: "The O.A Ruff Sports Stadium has a broad range of fitness programs including the Living Longer, Living Stronger program for the over 50s, and a lot of people aged from 20 upwards use the main gym – now we are targeting the younger members of our community."

"We are trying to get youth fitness going with this series of eight-week programs – it’s so important to start early and get kids into good habits."

The Active Kids program is for children aged 6-9 and the focus is on fun. The program helps children improve their fitness, balance and co-ordination as well as their self-esteem.

Junior Circuit is targeted at 10-13 year olds and the program includes general fitness, strength and co-ordination using light weights and cardio exercise.

Teen Gym gives girls and boys aged 14-16 a complete workout and is designed to challenge and improve their health and fitness.

VicFit level 3 instructor Sharron Rutter will run the programs, which cost $7 per session or $40 for eight weeks.
