Pit Your Wits Against Librarians In ‘The Big Ask’

To celebrate the launch of their ‘Just Ask @ your library’ program this month, Latrobe City’s libraries are inviting people to take part in ‘The Big Ask’.

Library Branch Coordinator, Noeline Grayden, said The Big Ask is a fun trivia competition with 20 questions such as ‘What size shoe does Ian Thorpe wear?’ and ‘Which Internet search engine is named after a famous butler?’

"All of the questions are designed to test either general knowledge or the ability to source answers. All completed questionnaires will go into a draw to win one of 43 Trivial Pursuit board games allocated to library services throughout Victoria," Ms Grayden explained.

Ms Grayden said The Big Ask highlighted the enormity of questions librarians answer in their day to day work.

"At some time or another everyone feels there are questions they simply cannot answer. But all questions can be answered by the ultimate search engine – librarians. In fact, librarians answer over 2.75 million questions each year," Ms Grayden said.

"We don't just help people with school assignments, we get all sorts of questions - like how to buy a kit house, what does the inside of a kangaroo look like, community information, and advice on the best internet sites. Just ask us anything.

"Whether it’s a question about a crossword puzzle clue, how to put together a business plan or what the temperature is in Helsinki, your local librarian can help find the answers.

"Librarians love a trivia challenge and during May, libraries are inviting Victorians to pit their skills against librarians in The Big Ask. It’s a great trivia challenge," Ms Grayden said.

Copies of The Big Ask trivia questions are available from any Latrobe City library or can be downloaded at www.libraries.vic.gov.au/atyourlibrary/info/bigask

Completed entries should be returned to any Latrobe City Library by Monday 31 May 2004.
