Young People Have All The Fun

Recent National Youth Week activities were a big success with young people celebrating different cultures in Bass Coast.

The event, called KISBOz Day, acknowledged the Karen (Burmese), Indigenous, Sudanese, Brazilian and Aussie youth communities.

Bass Coast Shire Council Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said KISBOz Day attracted over 150 young people to two events at Wonthaggi and Cowes.

"A group of young people of different cultural backgrounds organised the activities using cultural sports to raise awareness of challenges they faced in settling into Wonthaggi. All those at the sessions listened with interest to stories from the young people about moving to Australia and how the different games are important in their home country," said Mr Piasente.

"This was taken to another level with a demonstration of the sports and the chance to have a go.

"A big hit was ‘came ball’ demonstrated by the Karen young people, which had everyone totally amazed by their foot skills and agility," Mr Piasente continued.

Even the special guest, local Olympian Belinda Snell, a member of the Australian Opals Women’s Basketball team, was impressed.
Belinda shared her experiences playing overseas and cultural challenges she faced. Of course basketball got a mention, before Belinda took young people through some skill training.

"The fun enjoyed by the young people who participated in all sessions was obvious. Another activity featured on the day was indigenous games. These proved a great way to improve agility and team work," said Mr Piasente.

"Overall it was a great event organised by a group of young people, supported by, Gippsport, South Coast Primary Care Partnership and funded by Victorian Government and Bass Coast Shire Council."
