Locals Comment On Cape Woolamai Meeting Place

Proposed rotunda and picnic facilities for Cleeland Bight

It was a gorgeous day for the recent 3925 Community Sausage Sizzle, held at Cleeland Bight, Cape Woolamai, on Saturday 23 November. Many local residents attended the informal event, which incorporated a community consultation about the proposed rotunda and picnic facilities for the site and Council’s draft foreshore management plan for the area.

"Representatives of both the 3925 Community Action Team (CAT) and Bass Coast Shire Council were on hand to talk to local community about the proposed plans for foreshore, carpark, recreation area and facilities," said Jillian Kelly, 3925 Project Facilitator. The 3925 building project encompasses San Remo, Cape Woolamai and Newhaven.

The result of a questionnaire that was conducted during the sausage sizzle resulted in overwhelming support for a community rotunda.

"Many respondents also suggested playground equipment be installed and there was general consensus that a good location for picnic facilities would be the opposite side of the carpark," said Jill.

"A small number of residents expressed concerns that constructing facilities such as a rotunda may invite trouble such as vandalism or noise, or have a negative impact on the environment," said Jill. "However, these issues will definitely be taken into consideration as planning progresses."

Jill said that other issues that were raised for consideration included: improving access for people of all abilities, installing more bins; upgrading existing and installing additional showering facilities; taking care of foreshore vegetation; and domestic animals such as dogs in the area.

"Many of these issues are included in the draft foreshore management plan, which is currently on display for public comment," said Jill.

Copies of the plan can be inspected at Council’s Wonthaggi and Cowes offices.

"In terms of constructing a rotunda in the area, the next step will be obtaining quotations from local, registered builders, and applying for funding," said Jill.

"Thank you to everyone who came to the BBQ and shared their ideas," said Jill. "Special thanks to the Community Action Team members for helping out on the day, and also the Vietnam Vets Museum for lending us the BBQ."
