Business success helped by negotiationBy Julina King - 4th February 2004 - Back to News Good negotiation skills can make the difference in today’s business environment according to Negotiation Skills trainer Sally Douglas.
"The ability to negotiate with financiers, suppliers, staff, customers, community groups and other stakeholder groups is important. Having the skills to negotiate will often determine the success of a business," she said.
Sally Douglas is the General Manager of Training Improvements, a company providing regional and rural communities with practical skills in negotiation, communication and time management.
"There are three elements to successful negotiation. Information, time and power. It is crucial to understand how to use these concepts to your advantage in both your personal and business negotiations," she said.
The training courses are designed to help businesses and their staff understand the concepts and process of successful negotiations. For example, how to plan a strategy, prepare objectives and set targets for negotiations; establish interests and options; identify sources of power and negotiate in teams.
"We’ve had a huge demand for these skills from people living in regional areas. Whatever your industry, business operators can save big dollars by having the skill and confidence to negotiate," Ms Douglas said.
"One of our participants told us how his negotiation skills saved him thousands of dollars, which impacted positively on his profitability – all because he had the courage to negotiate a better deal," she said.
How to Negotiate Successfully will be run in Traralgon on February 19th and again in Warragul on June 10th, 2004 from 8.30am – 4.30pm. For further details on the course call Training Improvements on 1800 229 277.
Tips for good negotiations
Þ Begin with a clear understanding of what you want (know your limits and when to stop)
Þ List all of the points that are of some importance, and prioritise these
Þ Maintain a sense of humour
Þ Give yourself ample time and don’t be backed into a corner
Þ Use silence and know how to respond to silence
Þ It is the total value of a negotiation that is important, not merely the buy or sell price
Þ It is the ability to ethically negotiate and derive a satisfactory outcome that is mutually satisfying and distinguishes skilful negotiators from others
