Call to put exercise back on the school curriculum Fitness Instructor says early invention is the key to fighting obesity By Suzana Talevski - 6th February 2014 - Back to News Les Mills programs have been keeping people engaged in fitness for over 20 years now, including gyms in Gippsland.
Victorian based Les Mills Instructor Matthew Thraxton is an international master trainer and presenter and he says he is shocked that despite all the information now available on leading a healthy lifestyle, the global obesity epidermic is getting bigger and bigger.
"I see sugar, junk food and sedentary lifestyles as a major world-wide problem. It’s really worrying that despite all the education available regarding healthy eating and exercise, our obesity crises and lifestyle related disease continues to escalate. It’s really important that we keep working on this. One of the keys is early invention and education at a school level.
Thraxton says daily exercise should be compulsory on the school curriculum.
"I love the idea of it being group fitness too because then we can cater to all levels of fitness and ability in children. Everyone wins.
I’m not saying we should take out sport days or competition, we need that; but we also need to provide for the kids who aren’t interested in sport, or do not have the confidence or ability to take part. We should be reaching through the schools and setting these kids up for a life with good health habits from an early age."
