By Department Of Primary Industries - 16th April 2003 - Back to News All farmers should be aware that cattle need to be tail or ear tagged before they are sold, but how many are aware of the requirements for tail tagging cattle that are disposed of in other ways.
All cattle leaving a property, whether for sale at the sale yards, for slaughter at an abattoir or for disposal at a knackery need to be tail tagged in the prescribed manner. If cattle are not tagged before leaving the property, the farmer, the transporter and the agent that sells the cattle are liable to be prosecuted. Adult cattle should have tail tags or ear tags if they have no tails. Bobby calves up to 6 weeks old sold without their dam should have a white bobby calf ear tag.
The tagging system is a highly effective method of trace back that enables early detection of major disease outbreaks and/or chemical residue occurrences. An effective trace back system is essential for continued access of Australian beef products to overseas markets.
