Library Visitors View ‘Travelling Treasures’ First HandVisitors to Moe Library were treated to a visual feast of historical items as the State Library of Victoria presented its ‘Travelling Treasures’ exhibition on Tuesday night. By Latrobe City - 27th March 2007 - Back to News Items exhibited included an account of the First Fleet, the diary of Samuel Lazarus, maps of the Victorian Goldfields and a visual diary by artist Ron Searle.
Latrobe City mayor, Anthony Zimora said that the presentations both at the Moe Library and at Lowanna College were amongst the most well attended of all the visits that the organisers had made in the region.
"The ‘Travelling Treasures’ presentation was well attended and provided the community with an opportunity to see significant primary documents of our heritage as well as being able to listen to Mr Andrew Hiskens, manager of learning services from the State Library who shared his knowledge and passion for Australian history with those who attended," Cr Zimora said.
"Mr Hiskens spoke informatively on the history of the items in the display such as the voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay with an account of the establishment of the colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, by Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) published in 1789.
"He also talked about the diary of Samual Lazarus, recounting his time on the goldfields and a first hand account of the Eureka Rebellion, dated 24 September 1853 to January 1855.
"Mr Hiskens displayed two authentic maps of the Victorian goldfields and The Lofty Cannon Collection, comprising of a letter from Ron Searle to Lofty Cannon (both prisoners of war at Changi in Singapore) and a visual diary by the artist Ron Searle given to Lofty Cannon.
"Being able to both see these items first hand and hear about their historical significance was a wonderful experience," Cr Zimora added.
"Latrobe City Library service was also privileged to receive a gift from the State Library of Victoria of the title ‘Treasures of the State Library of Victoria’ which will be available for loan. This publication is an excellent history of the development of the State Library collection showcasing more than 200 images sourced from the Library’s world-class collection including rarely seen photographs, letter and maps similar to those presented at Moe," Cr Zimora explained.
"We look forward to seeing further treasures in the collection when the State Library embarks on more travelling presentations in future," Cr Zimora concluded.
