Mayor moved by unique art exhibitionBy Latrobe City Council - 11th May 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, has presented a framed certificate to the artists involved with the ‘Faith and Fabric Exhibition’ at the Traralgon Uniting Church, to recognise the positive impact that the group has had in the development of the Gippsland Innovation Festival over the last three years.
Cr Lougheed said that the Faith and Fabric group’s participation in the Gippsland Innovation Festival, with an exhibition of their unique art work, certainly deserved the title of being the most colourful event in the Gippsland Innovation Festival Program. "It has offered a visual feast that has surprised and impressed visitors from all over Victoria," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Bruce Lougheed said he was extremely moved by the exhibition. "I had heard of the Faith and Fabric Group; in part, because of their involvement in the Festival, but this was the first time I had seen their work. It is amazing," Cr Lougheed said.
The Faith and Fabric group began twenty years ago and comprises of four ladies who work together as one. They do not sew or glue, as one might expect, but create their work on polystyrene sheets with fabric and pins, constantly finding new ways to express spiritual and contemporary themes.
Cr Bruce Lougheed said their work is a revelation. Some of their work is focused on the challenges members of the Uniting Church had to face when the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches came together," he explained.
Recent works by this small but very creative group of local people are a feature of this exhibition, and many of the large works on display have been exhibited in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria. Gippsland is now recognising and enjoying these surprising art works as a part of the Gippsland Innovation Festival.
Bev Palmer, spokesperson for the group, said that the artists were delighted to be acknowledged by Latrobe City.
"We know that what we do is innovative and different. While we have taken our works around the state for exhibition, it has been tough at times raising awareness of our work locally. The Gippsland Innovation Festival is a great concept and we are pleased to have been a positive influence on its success," Mrs Palmer said.
The Faith and Fabric Exhibition concludes on Friday 13 May. It will be open on the Friday from 9am-1pm. Admission is free. Adults and Children are welcome.
