Bass Coast A Key Player In The Western Port Greenhouse Alliance’S Climate Change Project

Is climate change already with us? What will it mean in Bass Coast? A major regional project is currently addressing these questions.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council is a key partner in the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance (WPGA), which recently received a grant from the Australian Greenhouse Office and the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment. The funding is for a two year project to examine in depth the impacts of climate change on the Western Port region. The region covers the local government areas of Bass Coast, Casey, Cardinia, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula.

Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith said that the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Project will help us to understand the implications of some of the questions we all have to consider.

"We need to think about what will be changed and how it will be changed," said Mr Smith.

"It will also help us address issues such as what we can do if sea levels rise and how climate changes will affect our communities.

"In light of recent events, if hotter temperatures mean increased bushfire risk, it’s important to think about the ways we can respond," Mr Smith continued.

The Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation project will inform local government, State government and other decision makers in the Western Port region and assist them in preparing for and adapting to climate change. The approaches to climate change assessment and adaptation that will be developed through the project may be used in other regions in Australia in the future.

"The study is groundbreaking, placing Bass Coast at the forefront of climate change response in Australia", said Bass Coast Mayor Cr Neville Goodwin.

"The project enables local councils in the Western Port region to prepare for the impacts of climate change and also demonstrate the important role that local government can play on a national level".

Other major partners in the project include the CSIRO Climate Impacts Group, Marsden Jacob Associates, economics and public policy consultants, and Broadleaf Capital, risk specialists.

The Western Port Greenhouse Alliance, formed in 2004, works with the community and council on a range of projects including the Planet Savers schools program, sustainable dairy farming, public street lighting and offsetting carbon emissions through biodiversity plantings.
